Randolph Caldecott Randolph Caldecott born in Chester, England on in March 22, 1846. Died in St. Augustine, Florida on February 12, 1886. Considered the "father" of the modern picture book, Caldecott was a gifted draftsman, as well as illustrator. Recognized as the first to realize the potential of the verbal and visual relationship in picture books.
